How to set up a custom 404 page
Available on Solo and above, for projects uploaded as a ZIP file.
A custom 404 page replaces our standard "not found" page with a page from your own project. Visitors who open a missing link still see your branding and a way back to your site.
Set it up
- Make sure your 404 page is a file inside your ZIP, for example
404.html. If it isn't, add it, re-zip your project and update it. - On your dashboard, click Update on your project.
- Scroll down to Access Mode, and switch Error Configuration on.
- In Error Path, delete the example
/index.html. Type the path to your 404 page, starting with/, for example/404.html. - If your page is inside a folder, include the folder:
/pages/404.html. - Click Update. The setting only goes live once you've updated the project.
Turn it off
Switch Error Configuration off, then click Update. Visitors will see our standard 404 page again.
Good to know
- The setting is per project. Each project needs its own.
- It works on password-protected and email-capture projects.
- It also shows when someone opens a folder on your site that has no index file.
Why isn't my custom 404 page showing?
- Can't find Error Configuration? It only appears for projects uploaded as a ZIP. It isn't available for PDFs, single files, pasted HTML, document collections, or PHP, Python, React and Node projects.
- Seeing your home page instead? Error Path still says
/index.html. Change it to your 404 page's path and click Update. - Seeing our standard 404 page? Check that you clicked Update after turning it on. Then check the path matches your file exactly, including capital letters and folders. It must start with
/, or the file won't be found. You won't see an error message if the path is wrong. - Does your site show a page for every address? Some sites, like single-page apps, never report a page as missing. Your custom page won't appear on these.
- Still seeing the old version? Open your link in a private window, or clear your browser cache.
